Parent Alert:
Children with sensory integration issues as part of other diagnosis need special attention by their physician and other caretakers
Students with an Asperger Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum, or PDD NOS diagnosis may be particularly vulnerable for a high tolerance of pain and or an inability to sense and
localize feelings of discomfort in different areas of their bodies. A recent case alerted us to this serious concern. A student contracted an undiagnosed infection. His
behavior changed. He was more irritable, oppositional, and off his typical level of performance. No medical indicies such as fever or other signs than a ‘cold’
and short period of flu-like symptoms were observed. The boy felt no pain, reported no discomfort for well over a month as his condition deteriorated until it reached
life-threatening status. His infection was unnoticed until his work site supervisor noticed a change in his level of activity and increased fatigue. This observation was
shared with the boy’s father. The student was taken to his pediatrician who after an examination ordered him rushed to a hospital for further tests. The boy was diagnosed
with cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure and immediately hospitalized. His heart was seriously enlarged and his condition was life threatening. He is recuperating
back at his residential school now after five months with a modified schedule, and medical monitoring.
- Regular physical check ups
- Changes in behavior are not often from external causes alone
- Rule out physical / medical causes of behavior change first
- Physicians need to be especially sensitive to those children who are unable to self-report discomfort or medical symptoms accurately
