Quinebaug Valley Middle School Music Festival Recordings - UPDATED 2011!
The Quinnebaug Valley Middle School Music Festival is a concert where exceptional middle school musicians are nominated by their director to perform in a band or chorus with students from all over Eastern Connecticut. This year The Learning Clinic had two students who performed in the chorus.

TLC offers a number of courses in Performing Arts. Performing is a major element in all of our courses. Students examine their given art form from idea, to planning and rehearsal, to fruition, and finally reflection. This gives the student a true artistic arc of creation in the given art form. Our courses are highly imaginative and innovative and expose students to a number of different mediums in multiple ways.

Music (Top)

Elementary students attend courses in Music Appreciation and Theory, where they learn elements of listening and understanding music as well as create a number of art inspired music projects and original compositions. Middle school and high school students have the ability to take Music Appreciation and Theory courses as well. These courses are rooted in strong musical element knowledge and relate to music of varying genres. These studies encompass time periods from classical to modern day rap and hip-hop.

Acting (Top)

Students in middle and high school curricula may take part in acting courses. Acting courses get progressively more advanced and a student must take acting courses in sequence.

In Acting 1, the student becomes familiar with movement and spatial relationships on stage. A number of movement based techniques are used and the course culminates in the student creation of a movement based monologue.

In Acting 2, students begin to become aware of character development through improvisational exercises and Uta Hagen acting techniques. The student will learn how to expand on Acting 1 knowledge of movement to create a physical and believable complete character.

In Acting 3, students begin advanced scene study and script analysis. Students are assigned roles from selected text; rehearsal and performance of these roles continue throughout the course. Elements of theater history and set design also become prevalent.

Voice and Puppets (Top)

Students in Vocal Lab work on socialization and communication techniques with their voices. Various speech exercises are used to prepare students to write their own persuasive speech, which they perform at the end of the course.

Puppetry courses are taught in extended day sessions. Students demonstrate design, manipulation, and performance with a specific puppet. Classes include marionettes, rod and shadow, sock, and full body puppeteering. Students are responsible for writing and directing an original scripted puppet show to perform at the end of the puppetry unit.

Ensembles (Top)

Students may participate in weekly courses in band, orchestra, chorus, school plays, and talent shows through out the year. These groups of students improve their craft in a group setting. They demonstrate how to interpret each other’s creative ideas along with the artistic ideas of well known artists. They demonstrate how to build their skills while encouraging the creativity and positive feelings in support of members of the ensemble. The ensembles participate in all of the special occasions and performing opportunities at TLC (graduation, talent show, etc) as well as performances in established creative institutions in the community.
